With easy access to online news and social media, the visibility of Australia’s attitude towards Aboriginal peoples has been forced under the spotlight through issues such as police brutality, the mysteries of Aboriginal deaths in custody, cyber-racism, and the non-inclusive Australia Day protest.
Responding to Aboriginal Australians trauma and challenges, this series of works confronts these very issues affecting Aboriginal communities that are the direct results of loss of agency and power.
Edition of 7 (+2 AP)The Southern Cross stars in the sky flying,
Look down where Kadee Kangaroo lay dying.
Struck hard by an automobile out of the blue,
The rabbits watched on during the live preview.
Brothas and sistas rushed to her side in grief,
No rabbit offered support to the animals’ utter disbelief.
The rabbits carry on with their daily affair,
A light detail for later of which they will share.
Tomorrow, or maybe the next day the rabbits will forget,
But for brothas and sistas these ongoing ‘incidents’ makes them sweat.
As Kadee Kangaroo was forced asleep forever on this day
The animals remember this was only Monday.
Edition of 7 (+2 AP)The rabbit hung threatening of having them expelled,
‘Get off my land’ I worked hard and earned this myself!
‘What a nice place you have here’ exclaimed Kalti Kangaroo,
‘I swear its familiar, I think I used to live here too.’
Barega Brolga started yarnin,
‘Will we get in trouble from stringing up this one little bunny?’
But Ellin Emu reminded ‘Nah surely not, they nearly killed us all off remember that hunny?'
Laying around relaxing at ease,
They start singing ‘Will you come waltzing Matilda with me’.
Edition of 7 (+2 AP)‘Australians’ issue revelry,
For you are young and definitely free.
You claim to toil with your heart and hand,
But for me and many others you’ve destroyed our dreamland.
I fight for my ancestors’ voice in this country,
But you say you don’t care ‘it’s the past’ so bluntly.
They say this country has freedom of speech,
As long as it doesn’t disrupt you or cause any breach.
So I guess I can only be part of this so-called community,
As long as I don’t thunderstorm on your land of opportunity.
I will not soften and I will not quiet,
Until it’s understood what happened here and you do not deny it.
Edition of 7 (+2 AP)My spirit, my soul, you can’t have it it’s mine.
Back off now, get lost, you’re hurting my bloodline.
There is too many of you and too few of me.
You are flooding us out, I cannot see, I cannot see!
What’s mine isn’t yours and what’s yours was once mine.
I am alone, I am 3%, but I will not consign.
